Often times I don’t actually pit coffees against each other. Usually, I ask myself a series of questions to narrow down the type of coffee I’m looking for.

That system works really well for making decisions on which coffees to buy.

What Roast Level Should You Get?

The roast level is maybe the most important question you should ask yourself.

After all, there are a ton of different roasts out there. And each one will change the way your coffee brews, tastes, and lasts.

For example, lighter roasts will have a brighter acidity and be punchier. They will have more unique flavors.

Darker roasts will have bolder flavors and more intensity. They will be smoother.

Medium roasts will be a nice middle ground between the two.

For espresso, the best way to answer this question is to think about how you like to drink espresso.

The truth is that coffee beans last for at least a few weeks before a noticeable drop in flavor quality.

The only time I would recommend getting the freshest possible roast is when you’re buying pre-ground coffee.

Pre-ground coffee loses its flavor much faster than whole-bean coffee. In this case, I would highly recommend trying to find the freshest pre-ground coffee you can.
